Celebrate Kansas!

Published by Kiley Stinson at 5:05 AM under Agriculture

This week, Kansas is celebrating Kansas Ag Week. Governor Brownback has declared March 14-20, 2011 Kansas Agriculture Week in recognition of the strong agriculture tradition in Kansas and the role the agriculture industry plays in the Kansas economy. Among the festivities, as a part of celebrating yesterday’s National Ag Day, Governor Brownback honored three Kansas family farms as they celebrate their sesquicentennial year. Kansas has a strong agricultural tradition that predates its statehood, and agriculture continues to be a significant contributor to the state’s economic well-being.

Here are a few quick facts on Kansas’ agricultural impact on the economy!

Kansas is a leader in wheat, grain sorghum and beef production, and the state ranks sixth in farm product exports, which were valued at $5.9 billion in 2008.

  • One Kansas farmer can feed 155 per year
  • Kansas is home to 65,500 family farms!
  • Kansas families farm 46 million acres across the state
  • Cash receipts for farm marketings were valued at nearly $14 billion in 2008.

As part of  Kansas Ag Week, The Kansas Department of Agriculture has started a schedule of things to talk about each day through social media about our state and its role in agriculture. You can check out the topics on their website at http://www.ksda.gov/kansas_agriculture/content/383

Lets celebrate and thank our farmers!

Until next time,
Kiley
